“If I’m already getting Thermage for my face, can’t a few of those shots also be used around my eyes?”
“Wouldn’t treating close to the under-eye area with the facial tip be similar to Eye Thermage?”
During Thermage consultations in Gongdeok, we often hear questions about whether the facial Thermage tip can also be used to treat the eye area.
If both the face and the eye area are showing reduced firmness, treatment for both areas can be planned on the same day.
However, using some of the shots from a facial Thermage treatment on the eyelids is not the same as Eye Thermage.
The eyelids are thinner than facial skin, cover a much smaller area, and are located directly over the eyes.
For this reason, Thermage FLX uses different treatment tips for the face and for the eye area.
Rather than thinking of Eye Thermage simply as “Thermage around the eyes,” it is more accurate to understand it as a Thermage treatment specifically designed for the anatomical characteristics of the eyelids.
1. With Eye Thermage, Decide What Needs to Be Treated Before Comparing Shot Counts
When considering Eye Thermage, it is easy to begin by comparing 225 shots with 450 shots.
In practice, however, the treatment area should be determined before the number of shots.
For example, someone whose main concern is reduced firmness of the upper eyelids may require a different treatment range from someone concerned about the upper and lower eyelids as well as fine lines around the eyes.
The size of the eyelid area and the degree of laxity also vary from person to person.
For this reason, it is not appropriate to think of 225 shots simply as a “smaller treatment” and 450 shots as a “larger treatment.”
A 225-shot treatment may be considered when focusing on a particular eyelid area or treating a relatively limited range.
A 450-shot treatment may be considered when a broader area, including the upper and lower eyelids and the surrounding eye area, needs to be addressed.
However, there is no fixed formula that says:
225 shots are for the upper eyelids, while 450 shots are for both the upper and lower eyelids.
In actual treatment, the shots are distributed according to where laxity is more noticeable and whether the surrounding eye area also needs to be treated.
With Eye Thermage, therefore, the shot count is not the starting point of the treatment plan.
It is closer to the result of first determining how much of the eye area actually needs to be treated.
2. Facial Thermage and Eye Thermage Use the Same Basic Principle, but They Treat Different Areas
Thermage delivers radiofrequency energy into tissue to create controlled thermal stimulation, promoting collagen contraction and subsequent remodeling.
Facial Thermage and Eye Thermage are based on the same fundamental principle.
But the anatomical conditions of the treatment areas are different.
The face provides a relatively broad treatment area.
The eyelids, by contrast, are thin, narrow, and highly contoured.
Most importantly, the upper and lower eyelids are located directly over the eyes, making it difficult to approach them in the same way as other facial areas.
This is why the eyelids require a dedicated treatment tip designed for the eye area, along with a separate protective process for the eyes.
During facial Thermage, it may be possible to treat facial skin relatively close to the under-eye area.
However, treating facial skin beneath the eyes is not the same as treating the lower eyelid itself with Eye Thermage.
This is also why Eye Thermage cannot simply be replaced by allocating some of the shots from a facial Thermage treatment to the eyelids.
Even when the underlying energy technology is the same, the treatment has a different meaning when a different anatomical area is treated with a tip specifically designed for that area.
3. Not Everyone Whose Eyes Look Droopy Necessarily Needs Eye Thermage
When the eye area begins to look less firm, Eye Thermage may naturally come to mind.
It may be considered when the upper eyelids feel looser than before, when the lower eyelid skin appears thin and lax, or when fine lines around the eyes are accompanied by reduced firmness.
However, reduced skin firmness is not the only reason the eyes can appear heavy or droopy.
Changes in eyebrow position may contribute.
Eyelid fat, underlying bone structure, or conditions such as ptosis may also affect the appearance independently of skin firmness.
When these structural factors play a greater role, improving skin firmness alone may not create the full change a patient initially expects.
Before deciding on Eye Thermage, it is therefore important to determine how much of the visible change is actually related to reduced firmness of the eyelid skin itself.
If both overall facial firmness and eyelid firmness have declined, facial Thermage and Eye Thermage may be planned for the same day.
Even in this situation, however, the face and eyelids should not simply be treated as one continuous area.
Instead, the treatment range should be planned separately for each area using the appropriate facial and eye-specific tips.
Timeless Answers.
Can some of the 600 shots from facial Thermage be used on my eyelids?
Eye Thermage cannot be replaced by simply allocating some of the shots from a facial treatment to the eyelids.
Treating the eyelids themselves requires a dedicated tip designed for the eye area, along with appropriate protective measures for the eyes.
Can Eye Thermage sometimes provide less improvement than expected for droopy-looking eyes?
Yes.
If the appearance is influenced more by eyebrow position, eyelid fat, underlying bone structure, or ptosis than by reduced skin firmness, Eye Thermage alone may not produce all of the changes you expect.
This is why it is important to first determine how much of the concern is actually related to laxity of the eyelid skin.
Is it better to combine Eye Thermage with a skin booster?
Combination treatment may be considered when reduced firmness around the eyes is accompanied by concerns such as fine lines, dryness, or uneven texture.
Eye Thermage primarily addresses firmness around the eyes, while skin boosters can address different concerns such as skin texture, hydration, and fine lines.
Because the skin around the eyes is particularly thin and sensitive, skin boosters designed for use in delicate eye areas, such as Rejuran I, RE2O FINE, or Juvelook Eye, may be considered depending on the individual skin condition.
Eye Thermage in Gongdeok: The Eye Area Requires a Dedicated Tip Because the Eyelids Are Anatomically Different
When firmness around the eyes is a concern, simply adding a few more shots to a facial Thermage treatment may not provide the same approach as Eye Thermage.
The eyelids are thinner and narrower than other facial areas and are located directly over the eyes.
This makes them an area that requires an appropriate treatment tip and a separate treatment plan designed specifically for the anatomy of the eyelids.
The same principle applies when comparing 225 and 450 shots of Eye Thermage.
Rather than focusing only on the numbers, it is more important to determine which areas actually need treatment and how broad the treatment range should be.
The treatment approach may also differ depending on whether reduced eyelid firmness is the primary concern or whether eyebrow position, fat, or other structural factors are contributing to the appearance.
If you are considering Eye Thermage in Gongdeok, instead of asking only which option provides more shots, it may be more useful to first determine which areas around your eyes actually need treatment and whether the treatment plan is designed appropriately for that specific range.
