“Is filler the only option for nasolabial folds?”
“I don’t think I’ve lost much facial volume, but the lines are still deep even when I’m not smiling.”
Many patients who visit us in Gongdeok for nasolabial folds initially think of filler or lifting treatments.
If loss of midface volume has created deeper shadows around the nasolabial folds, treatments that restore volume, such as filler or Sculptra, may be helpful.
But not all nasolabial folds develop for the same reason.
For some people, volume loss makes the folds appear deeper.
For others, downward movement of midface tissue creates a more pronounced fold.
And in some cases, repeated folding over time can leave the dermis thinner and create a narrow, etched line that remains visible even when the face is at rest.
This is why the appropriate treatment can differ depending on what is actually causing the nasolabial fold.
1. With Nasolabial Folds, the First Question Is Not How Deep They Are, but Why They Became Deep
When evaluating nasolabial folds, we do not look only at the depth of the line.
We need to determine whether volume loss in the midface has created a hollow above the fold, whether tissue descent has made the fold more pronounced, or whether the crease itself has become deeply etched into the dermis.
If volume loss is the primary issue, treatments such as filler or Sculptra may be considered first.
If tissue laxity plays a greater role, a lifting treatment may be more appropriate.
But when overall facial volume is relatively well preserved and a narrow, deep line remains visible even without smiling, treatment directed specifically at the etched crease itself may be considered.
One option in this situation is JUVGEN.
2. Filler and JUVGEN Approach Nasolabial Folds in Different Ways
Filler works by directly adding volume to an area where volume is lacking.
This can make it particularly useful when a broader hollow or volume deficit needs to be corrected.
However, placing a larger amount of filler into a narrow, deeply etched line may sometimes make the area appear fuller or heavier than intended.
JUVGEN approaches this type of crease differently.
JUVGEN delivers very small amounts of hyaluronic acid and carbon dioxide into the dermal layer where the wrinkle is located.
This creates controlled stimulation within the depressed area, with the goal of encouraging subsequent collagen formation and tissue regeneration.
Rather than filling a broad space in the way a filler does, JUVGEN is closer to directly addressing a narrow, deeply etched depression within the dermis.
The question, therefore, is not simply whether filler or JUVGEN is “better.”
The more important step is to determine whether your nasolabial folds are primarily related to volume loss, tissue descent, or an etched dermal crease.
3. With JUVGEN, the Regenerative Process After Treatment Also Matters
Some changes may be visible immediately after a JUVGEN treatment.
This is partly because a very small amount of hyaluronic acid is delivered into the depressed area, temporarily adding volume to the crease.
But JUVGEN should not be evaluated only by what you see immediately afterward.
Following controlled stimulation of the dermis beneath the wrinkle, collagen formation and tissue remodeling may continue over time.
As this process develops, the appearance of the treated area may continue to change.
A single treatment may produce a noticeable improvement, but depending on the depth and extent of the wrinkle and the thickness of the skin, additional treatment may sometimes be considered for areas that remain.
JUVGEN is also not necessarily the first choice for every nasolabial fold.
If substantial volume loss is present, a volume-restoring treatment may need to take priority.
If tissue laxity is the dominant issue, lifting treatment may be more appropriate.
Rather than deciding on one procedure in advance, the important step in treating nasolabial folds is to identify which underlying factor contributes most to the crease.
Timeless Answers.
Can I have JUVGEN if I have previously had filler?
This depends on where the previous filler was placed and how much remains.
The first step is to determine whether there is already sufficient volume in the nasolabial area or whether the remaining concern is primarily a deeply etched line that may need to be addressed separately.
If you have previously had filler, it is helpful to tell your dermatologist when you had the treatment, which area was treated, and which product was used, if you know.
Can JUVGEN be used for areas other than nasolabial folds?
It may be considered for other areas where a narrow, deeply depressed wrinkle or groove is the primary concern.
Examples may include marionette lines, horizontal neck lines, or depressed scars where a distinct dermal depression is present.
However, skin thickness, movement, and surrounding anatomy differ from one area to another, so treatment is not performed in exactly the same way for every location.
What reactions can occur after JUVGEN treatment?
Because JUVGEN is an injectable treatment, temporary redness, swelling, discomfort, or bruising may occur.
The treated area may also feel temporarily raised, uneven, or firm to the touch.
If pain becomes severe or you notice changes in skin color after treatment, you should contact the medical clinic where the procedure was performed promptly.
Nasolabial Folds in Gongdeok Do Not All Need to Be Treated by Simply Adding Volume
Nasolabial folds may look like a single line on the surface, but several different factors can contribute to their appearance.
When volume loss is the main issue, a volume-restoring treatment may be appropriate.
When tissue descent plays a greater role, lifting treatment may need to be considered.
And when a narrow, deeply etched dermal crease remains visible, a regenerative treatment such as JUVGEN may be an option.
At Timeless Dermatology Mapo, our board-certified dermatologists do not determine treatment based solely on the appearance of the nasolabial line itself.
Instead, we evaluate how much volume loss, tissue laxity, and dermal creasing each contribute before deciding on the treatment direction.
If you are considering treatment for nasolabial folds in Gongdeok, the first step is to determine whether the fold is primarily a hollow that needs volume, a crease made more prominent by tissue descent, or a deeply etched line within the dermis.
